Confused.com has urged consumers to continue to do gas detection safety checks on their appliances.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at the website, highlighted the importance of having an up-to-date gas safety certificate.
He said: “Id encourage everyone to get gas appliances checked before switching them on and to check that chimneys, flues and vents have not become blocked over the summer.”
CO is caused by incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels, such as oil, wood, gas and coal.
A reduction in the air quality due to high levels of CO is not easily detectable, Mr Kloet said.
He went on to say that prolonged exposure can cause severe headaches, confusion, dizziness, fainting and can be fatal.
According to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive, 20 people die from CO poisoning due to gas appliances and flues not being properly installed.
“This silent killer can be prevented by taking some simple steps,” Mr Kloet stated.
