An electrochemical sensor for oxygen has been successfully developed by Membrapor (Switzerland). It exhibits exceptional characteristics, being; RoHS compliant, long-lived and having a high resolution even below 2% O2.
A main advantage of the sensor is that it is lead-free and that its lifetime is not limited by the consumption of internal components. It avoids many of the inherent problems with performance and quality seen with many lead-based oxygen sensors. The sensor was released in the miniature housing (4-series). The connection of the O2/M-100 is the same as with an electrochemical sensor for toxic gases. Also a potentiostatic circuit is needed to operate the 3-electrode sensor, in this case with a bias voltage. The operating conditions are the same as with other electrochemical gas sensors from Membrapor. The temperature range is -40 to +50 °C, whilst the humidity range is 15% to 90% RH.
The O2/M-100 has a baseline corresponding to 0.1% O2 and allows oxygen measurement with a resolution of 0.05%; therefore accurate measurements also at high oxygen deficiency can be performed and this with a response time below 10 seconds.
